Alcohol Addiction Is Not Your Fault
It is your responsibility
By Adrienne Kaliszak
When we are truly addicted to a substance it becomes impossible to think of anything else. All we want to do is feed that addiction. If we are not feeding that addiction, we are thinking of ways we can feed it. We can’t wait for that next hit, drink, shot, or bump.
We will go to any lengths to get that addiction fed- from lying, to stealing, to dealing and even selling our body.
The guilt and shame that comes with addiction can become more than we can bear, to the point we attempt or even complete taking our own life.
We are looked down upon by family, friends, and society.
Alcohol addiction is not our fault, and we should not be blamed or looked down upon because of our addiction. The drugs or alcohol themselves are made to be addictive and according to the DSM-5, “Addiction is a complex, chronic brain condition influenced by genes and the environment that is characterized by substance use or compulsive actions that continue despite harmful consequences.”
So, we know we are addicts and we know it’s not our fault, but what is the next step? What do we do to break free of this alcohol addiction?
Speaking to your doctor or checking into a rehab for a medical detox may be one of the first steps you take to start your path to freedom.
Following a medical detox, it’s important to get involved with a community of others who have also struggled with addiction.
Make stopping your addiction your number one priority.
Remember how you went to any length to feed your addiction, now go to any length to break free of it. This may include NA/AA, therapy, Smart Recovery, This Naked Mind, Be Sober, Rational Recovery, or any other of the myriad of supportive sobriety communities out there.
You are not a bad person just a person in a bad situation. You can get out of it; you can get free. Never give up. Fight until you break those chains and reclaim your freedom, your life.
You deserve it.
