Self-Worth and Overcoming Alcohol Addiction
By Adrienne Kaliszak
Often when in active addiction with alcohol we may not feel very good about ourselves. In fact, this may have been one of the reasons we began drinking in the first place.
We may have falsely believed by drinking we would feel good inside. Alcohol does temporarily give you a short-lived dopamine rush but it’s not nearly as great as receiving that high from living a good, honest life, filled with enjoyable activities and people we care about.
Low self-worth makes quitting alcohol more difficult, and odds are if you’ve been drinking for a long period of time, it probably is low.
So, what should you do to combat these low feelings about yourself?
I say take the necessary steps and quit anyway regardless of how you feel.
As you see yourself gaining more and more time between your last drink your self-worth will begin improving naturally.
I also suggest occupying your time doing activities you enjoy and are good at. Not only will this improve your self-esteem it will also keep you occupied as you work at stopping alcohol.
By working on yourself and your sobriety you will feel like you are doing something worthwhile, and it is, it’s monumental.
It’s a true adventure where you’ll grow and mature along the way.
The best way to do this is the tried-and-true way, “One Day at a Time”.
And as Simon Chapple says often throughout his program, “Get Excited About It!”
When we look at quitting alcohol as an exciting, new, and fun experience – with wonder and curiosity – it will make your transformation so much easier.
And it is a transformation. You are transforming yourself into a newer, healthier, happier, more joyful version of yourself.
The benefits of an Alcohol Free life keep adding up the further you are away from that last drink.
You may still have rough days, but you will learn how to navigate through those tough times as you go.
I strongly urge you to take part in a sober community like Be Sober or This Naked Mind or the myriad of sober Facebook groups out there. Somewhere you will find people working toward a sober lifestyle.
Having a daily gratitude practice will also help you feel good inside. Be grateful for this chance to get sober! Be grateful for making it another hour or 2 without drinking! Be grateful for that 1st full day you achieved sober and every day after!
Reward yourself for your achievements. It doesn’t need to be a material reward either, it can be a reward of a spa day, a walk-in nature, listening to your favorite music and dancing around, cooking up your favorite meal and celebrating with your closest friends.
Getting sober is so much more than one and done. It’s an art, a daily practice of getting to know yourself and taking care of yourself.
For me it’s also been about trusting in God and the process, although I know not everyone believes in God, for me my faith has kept me going on the toughest of days.
Many people turn to meditation, exercise, cooking, art, sports, or many other activities to fill the time created when reinventing yourself. The beauty of it you get to choose. You get to be who you want to be now, not who you had to be when all you wanted to do was drink.
As you get to know yourself and try new tasks or pick up old activities you had long forgotten about you will see your self-worth grow and grow.
Some people think it’s boring getting sober but it’s anything but boring! Being sober is as fun and enjoyable as you choose to make it.
Put forth the effort and work and you can live the life you’ve always dreamed of living.
As I’ve often heard in the sober communities “No one ever said they regret not drinking”.
