Staying Sober Through Easter
By Adrienne Kaliszak
Hippity-Hoppity Easter’s on its way!
With this upcoming holiday comes celebrating and socializing with family and friends. With the celebrating, alcohol is often widely present, and part of the celebration.
How can we navigate through Easter and keep our sobriety?
Plan Ahead
Plan for the soirée you will be attending. Start by bringing your own special treats or drink to enjoy, so you don’t feel like you’re missing out. Bring extra so you’re well prepared.
Besides planning with drinks and snacks you can plan the day out. Figure out what you will say if someone asks why you’re not drinking. For me everyone pretty much knows I don’t drink and don’t offer me liquor but there have been occasions when they didn’t know and I’d just respond, “No thanks, I have a drink”, or I’d be totally blunt and say, “I don’t drink anymore”. Sometimes it makes it a bit awkward but often they’ll ask me how I quit and offer congratulations. You’ll be surprised at the people who genuinely want to hear about how you quit.
Remember the reason for the season
Remind yourself of your main reason for celebrating Easter, it may be religious to you, or about enjoying family, getting together with loved ones, or making the day special for your children.
Without the alcohol the day will be a million times more special and memorable. You will remember and enjoy your day and time.
Be Positive
Keeping a positive attitude about celebrating with no booze will help tremendously. This is an amazing thing you are doing! Celebrating Easter is just a small part of your big, beautiful life. Look at the big picture. You are making healthier, wiser choices for yourself and family, Easter will pass but you’ll still need to live your life that’s acceptable to you which leads me too….
Play the Tape Forward
Playing the tape forward and contemplating how you would feel or what would happen if you decided to drink on Easter can help you stand firmer in your decision to not drink during the Easter Holiday.
My guess is you’d end up feeling remorse and regret, possible shame, and guilt, even anxiety if you decided to break your quit.
It may also be harder to gain another quit, “It’s easier to stay sober than to get sober”, as the saying goes.
Keep active with cooking, hosting, cleaning
By hosting the gathering you can keep yourself occupied with the get together by being social, serving, and cleaning. If you’re hosting, you’re not going to have time to think about drinking. It will be more about enjoying your guests and creating a nice atmosphere for them.
Enjoy your time with your loved ones, do your best to stay in the moment and focus on what you’re doing.
Plus, if you’re hosting you can decide what drinks will be served.
If your guests do bring alcohol, make sure they bring the leftover alcohol with them.
Offer to be a designated driver
You can also offer to be the designated driver to guests who may drink too much. This will almost guarantee you won’t think about drinking as you’ll need to be sober to get your friends or family home.
Keep it Small
And have a gathering with other people who don’t drink. Nothing says you must have a huge gathering for Easter. You can keep it simple and just have your closest friends or family who you know don’t drink.
My husband and I have gotten to be masters at this. We would rather avoid any temptation of using alcohol, so we gather with friends or family who don’t drink for the most part or meet on even playing grounds where we know alcohol won’t be digested. It works great for us.
Enjoy Yourself!!!
The most important thing is to have fun.
You really can have a great time socializing without booze.
It takes some practice but one day it will be easy, normal, and natural.
I promise!
