Begin Again

(Your Alcohol-Free resolution fizzled and died? Begin again.)
We’re heading into our third month of the New Year, March 2022. You may have come into 2022 with big and bold ideas of change and transformation.
One of the things you may have wanted to change was stopping or cutting back alcohol.
Especially after overdoing it during the holiday season, which in America basically begins on October 31st (Halloween) and doesn’t end until 3 months later on January 1st, New Year’s Day.
That’s a lot of celebrating and partying!
I hope you have continued your journey of an alcohol-free life since the New Year began but if you haven’t don’t be discouraged.
You can begin again.
Most people who stop a habit/addiction like alcohol need more than one shot at getting it put behind them for good.
I know this because I’ve had multiple quit attempts over the years, both with stopping cigarettes and with stopping drinking alcohol.
Some of these attempts lasted mere hours or days. Some a week or more. Other’s months and while others up to 2 years of continuous sobriety.
The key is don’t give up!
If you started the year off with a bang and high aspirations but your resolution fizzled after days or weeks of working on your goal it’s ok, in fact this is normal.
According to the fitness platform Strava, New Year’s resolutions usually die on January 12th, 12 days into the New Year, and only 8 percent of people actually complete that goal.
So, if you’re still going strong at your resolution you are an exception rather than a rule.
Don’t be disheartened though. Every day is a new beginning. A fresh day to start or continue with our dreams and goals.
Living an alcohol-free life is not one and done. When you stop drinking alcohol or any other unwanted habit or addiction it’s really a complete life overhaul what you’re doing.
You are creating new healthier life habits in place of the unhealthy ones.
It takes time, patience, and perseverance.
Not one successful person gained their success on their first try. They most likely had a series of perceived failures before they got to where they wanted to be on their journey.
And that’s what it’s about, the journey. Life, changing a habit, reaching new goals, is truly all about the journey.
How we manage and maintain our daily lives. How we cope when life gets tough. How we treat ourselves and others.
It’s about doing better today than we did yesterday.
Today is all we have.
Treat yourself with kindness, grace, and love.
Forgive often. Do your best.
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Learn from those mistakes.
Forge ahead and begin again. It’s your time, your life- Make the best of it.
Begin again.
