Alcohol Use and Covid
By Adrienne Kaliszak
To say 2020 were crazy times in the United States as well as throughout the world is an understatement. Life as we knew it drastically changed for most people worldwide when Covid-19 came on the scene, and we were faced with a global pandemic.
Schools, airports, borders, and businesses were shut down. We were directed by the government to stay at home and keep 6 feet away from strangers. We were instructed not to gather in groups of more than 10, even in our own homes. People lost jobs, loved ones became very ill, many died. A true nightmare.
My husband and I ended up using alcohol to cope, we have since stopped, but when Covid first started our drinking increased dramatically. It made me wonder if others’ drinking also increased since Covid hit.
Here is what I discovered from Movendi International
“Alcohol use increased by 27% by April 2020 and by November 2020 increased by 39%.
Binge alcohol use increased by 26% by April 2020 and rose by 30% by November 2020.”
Alcohol sales increased by 54% during this time and over 15 million Americans struggle with an alcohol addiction.
While these statistics are indeed sobering, there is hope to be found beyond the bottle.
When my husband and I saw the direction our alcohol use was heading in 2020, we decided we needed to put an end to it. I discovered an online community called Be Sober. It made all the difference in the world to me and my sobriety. I am nearly 17 months sober now.
You don’t need to be another statistic; you can choose to change the direction of your life right now. It is all in your hands.
While life is scary and uncertain at times, we can make the choice to deal with the stressors and fears in life in constructive and positive ways.
I’m not trying to be a buzz kill. I honestly care about our community and the people in this world. I know the heartache addiction and alcoholism can create in our lives as well as the lives of people we love. I also know all the beauty that can be restored by putting down the bottle and I long for others to experience that beauty and freedom.
