Common Sayings to Help you on your Recovery Journey
By Adrienne Kaliszak
One Day at A Time
I am sure you’ve heard, even overheard this phrase before. But it’s key to gaining, keeping, and maintaining sobriety. We need to focus on the day or moment at hand. When we look too far back, we can be filled with regrets and remorse, while too far ahead, may seem impossible and insurmountable. If we stay in the moment and focus on getting through one moment/craving/day at a time, it’s much more manageable and realistic. So, focus on getting through today sober, and today only. Tomorrow will take care of itself.
Not Today
This is a favorite of mine. It’s a spin on one day at a time. Not today means I won’t drink alcohol today (no matter what). Maybe tomorrow I’ll drink but today I won’t. (Repeat the next day). An old timer told me this after one of my first AA meetings, and I never forgot it. Try it, it really works.
NOPE
In the quit smoking community, I belonged to, NOPE meant Not One Puff Ever. But you can use this simple 4 letter word to NOPE anything- alcohol, weed, whatever. Just substitute the “P” in NOPE to “Poison”- Not One Poison Ever- NOPE.
I Can, I Will
Tell yourself this often “I can, I will”. Believe it because you can quit drinking or using drugs, and you will if you don’t quit trying and believe in yourself. Never give up.
Hold On to Hope
Hope is so incredibly important to have. Often in the throes of addiction we lose sight of hope. When we see others succeeding and we gain sober days our hope begins to return. It keeps us going and motivates us to continue with our journey.
Believe in Yourself
You’ve got to believe you can do this; know you can do this to be successful. You get this belief because you know you’ve succeeded at other difficult things in the past, things that seemed impossible: childbirth, a job interview, marriage, raising kids, climbing a mountain, running a marathon, public speaking, skateboarding. Chances are there’s something you’ve done in your life that you thought was impossible but through patience, education, and hard work you conquered it. You didn’t give up until you learned the new skill, or did the hard thing, overcame a fear. So, believe in yourself, you CAN do this.
Never Surrender
Never surrender. Don’t give up trying to reclaim your freedom, your life after a setback. Breaking free from addiction takes patience, and practice, and often more than one attempt at quitting. Show yourself kindness and grace, forgive yourself often and be patient with the process.
I Can Do Hard Things
While moving on from alcohol can be difficult at times, remind yourself that you indeed can-do hard things and “this too shall pass”.
Gratitude Begets Gratitude
When you begin incorporating gratitude in your daily routine, you’ll find more and more things to be grateful for and even become more aware of all the blessings in your life. Gratitude cultivates positivity in your life and keeping a positive attitude when becoming sober is so beneficial.
Calgon Take Me Away
Yes, this is from a 70’s commercial (aging myself lol), but a nice long bath complete with bubbles, candles, and music is a great way to distract and relax. Wash your troubles away.
I Am Worth It
What you are doing is an amazing and incredible thing and you are so, so worth it! Never forget that.
