How I Knew I Was Ready to Quit Drinking

The way I knew, really knew I was ready to quit drinking was after an exhaustive and tiring on and off again relationship I was having with alcohol. I would go days, weeks, even a month without, but something wasn’t clicking for me. I kept going back to it and would feel so defeated when I did.
I got involved with Annie Grace’s Live Alcohol Experiment, which helped tremendously. I started to see that there was progress being made even in the moment’s I slipped. I started feeling my hope return.
I then joined Simon Chapple’s Be Sober program. His enthusiasm and joy made quitting alcohol fun and seemed like less of a chore. Not something I had to do, but something I got to do, was blessed with doing.
I had gotten two weeks sober when I first began Simon’s quit drinking program, I then slipped during a vacation I went on with my family. When I returned from the vacation my daughter wrote my husband a note expressing how she felt when Greg and myself drank. It was heartbreaking. My daughter also confronted me and told me if we didn’t quit drinking she (at 16) would move out and live with friends or family members.
The stakes just got real high. My husband and I talked to each other about our daughter, our drinking, our life. At this point we both decided we would do whatever it took to get, and stay sober.
This was when I knew I was ready. I became willing to go through any uncomfortable feelings and challenges I would face, I would take them head on.
But, I didn’t do it alone. I had Simon, Michelle, Rob, Tina and the Be Sober Community to help me on this journey. The first thing I did was share with the group about the situation with my daughter, I also told them I was all in. I was met with so much support, kindness, and love.
I dove in head first into this exciting new world of sobriety. Learning as much as I could from Simon and his program. I shared when I struggled, as well as when I had something to celebrate. The love and support was amazing.
My sober days began piling up 1 month, 2 months, 3. Gradually and steadily I finally reached a year. That was such a huge milestone, one I thought I would never reach. But I did, and you can too.
Nothing as drastic as your kids threatening to move out must happen. Take a look at your life. Is what you’re doing now working for you? If not, look into what you can do to make changes, so you’re no longer just existing but flourishing.
It’s not about perfection, it’s about growing, loving yourself, loving others, and enjoying each moment on your journey. Even if you slip as long as you’re learning you’re still progressing. If you’ve tried to stop drinking 100 times, and didn’t succeed, try 101, it could be the quit that sticks.
