When we quit drinking it’s more than just about the booze. Yes, we have said goodbye to the alcohol, but we are saying yes to much more in doing so. It’s a journey of self-discovery, a winding road with twists and turns, blockades, and speed bumps.
Within those twists and turns there are beautiful pathways that slowly and gently ease us into a place of acceptance, self-love, and healing.
Breaking through the blockades opens our mind and heart to a newer, easier way of living. A life we are free to be our true and authentic self, without worry or fear. The speed bumps remind us that we are indeed human. They keep us humble as we learn to navigate over each little bump in the road.
It’s not an easy thing to do, traveling on a road we’ve never been on. With all its obstacles and caution signs. Maybe we’ve seen glimpses of this road, but we’ve never driven it to its final destination.
We look down a side street and wonder if that’s the turn we should make? Or should we get off at mile marker 72? We’re unsure so we ask for directions. We actually listen to these directions.
We begin traveling up a steep hill and in the distance we see the horizon. It is beautiful there– shades of purple, orange, yellow, and pink. There is the greenest lushest grass you can imagine, a rainbow of wildflowers, and waterfalls flowing down into this wondrous place, nurturing it with new life. It is a place we can go, a place we want to go. We just need to take our time and remain patient and diligent.
We will get there. Even with all those windy and twisty roads we will get there. One mile marker at a time.
Do you have a problem with alcohol? One minute test
Take the one-minute quiz and find out whether alcohol might be a problem in your life and if so, what you can do to change it.
'Your windshield is bigger than your rearview for a reason; the mirror is there to help you glance back at where you’ve been, but if you focus too much on it, you’re going to crash.
We are ALL affected by our past and we are ALL reminded of it now and again, but we cannot live in it unless we want to repeat it over and over again. We need to learn from it, take lessons from it, know what’s good (and not good) for us, and adjust accordingly. Mistakes are only mistakes until we learn from them and then they become lessons.'
Love this from the Your Tango blog, it sums up the need for a forward focused growth mindset in sobriety and life in general.
Having an amazing time in #Japan and managed to head south out of Tokyo for a few days today to Kamakura by the ocean.
The drinking culture here is totally different to the UK, but all the bars are full, not many AF options either, but I wouldn’t want to visit such an amazing place and spoil it by boozing.
These two inspiring books from leading sobriety coach Simon Chapple are out today!
