Best Ways to Manage Stress

Best Ways to Manage Stress

By Adrienne Kaliszak

There is a wide variety of ways to deal with and manage stress and it depends on your own personal preferences and likes. If you’re stuck on some ideas though, this handy list can give you a good place to start.

Reading as a stress reliever

A study from the University of Sussex shows that stress can be reduced up to 68% by reading just 6 minutes a day. Reading is also three hundred times more effective at reducing stress than walking.

Meditation to relieve stress and anxiety

Meditating just 10 minutes a day will create calmness and peacefulness inside you. It can help you stay in the present moment and can even help you get to sleep quicker. You can meditate to soothing music or listen to guiding meditations. Many people recommend the app Calm to use for meditating. There are thousands of free meditations of all sorts on YouTube as well.

Getting out in Nature

Observing nature; trees, flowers, grass, birds, lakes etc. will have a calming effect even on your most frazzled days. Being in nature lowers your cortisol levels and increases endorphins that make you feel good and promotes happiness.

Exercise

I know, I know we’ve all been told the importance of exercise and may be sick of hearing how wonderful it is for us, but it’s true Exercise, in just about any form, is an awesome stress reducer. Exercise is meditation in motion, really pumping up those feel good hormones while distracting you from the worries of the day. It is good for physical, mental, and spiritual health.

Art

Creating through painting, drawing, sculpting, coloring- you name it is an amazing stress reducer and it’s not just for kids. People of all ages, genders, and backgrounds can benefit immensely from artistic pursuits. Creating brings calmness and joy and gives you a way to express yourself. It’s so easy to get lost in an enjoyable art project you’re working on and have all your worries melt away. Plus, it’s a great way to prevent Alzheimers and cognitive decline.

Sex

Sex is an amazing stress reducer! Sex increases the love hormone, oxytocin, and releases an abundance of endorphins (happy hormones), as well as releasing cortisol which creates stress in us. It is also believed that semen contains mood lifting hormones that reduce depression. As if we needed another reason to have sex!

Journaling

Journaling and writing in general is an excellent way to reduce stress. By writing you are able to get all your worries and fears out of your head and down on paper. You can be yourself when you write in your journal, write out all your frustrations and sadness as well as your joys and achievements. It’s always fun to look back on a journal as time passes to see where you were then and where you are now. Journaling can help you see what parts of your life you can improve on as well as being a non-judgemental place to just be yourself raw and unedited.

I hope this article has given you some ideas of how you can relieve and reduce the stress in your life. Would love to hear how you deal with stress, please share in the comment section below.

'Your windshield is bigger than your rearview for a reason; the mirror is there to help you glance back at where you’ve been, but if you focus too much on it, you’re going to crash.

We are ALL affected by our past and we are ALL reminded of it now and again, but we cannot live in it unless we want to repeat it over and over again. We need to learn from it, take lessons from it, know what’s good (and not good) for us, and adjust accordingly. Mistakes are only mistakes until we learn from them and then they become lessons.'

Love this from the Your Tango blog, it sums up the need for a forward focused growth mindset in sobriety and life in general.
