If you follow me on Instagram, then you will likely know that I love an inspirational quote! I always have for all areas of my life, whether that’s for business success through to motivational quotes for my love of running and the same is true for my sobriety journey. From the interaction the quotes I post online receive, it is clear that I am not alone, so if you too love an inspirational quote, then this blog post is for you!
I wanted to put together some of my favourite inspirational quotes which have provided me with a positive boost for embracing my sober life and I hope they help you!
#1 Rob Lowe
I am absolutely love this quote from Rob Lowe. For those that don’t know, Rob Lowe is an American actor who has been in shows such as The West Wing. Throughout his life he has struggled with addiction and he was reported for saying the above quote on his views of addiction and recovery.
Why do I like it?
When I first read this quote, it literally felt like the words were written for me. My sobriety does genuinely feel like a gift I have given not just to myself, but to my family and friends as well. I’m a better person sober. More focused, alive, happier, a better husband and father. When I posted the above image to my Instagram followers, it also generated some fantastic interaction from others who also seemed to really appreciate the words from Rob Lowe and that’s why it takes the top spot!
#2 Winston Churchill
No matter what you think of the Winston Churchill, this quote from him can be applied to anyone facing any challenges in their life. At times, removing alcohol and opting for a positive life of sobriety can be extremely hard. The addiction wants to remain in control and it can feel like an impossible hell. However, this pain will not last. Do not give up.
Why do I like it?
This is one of those quotes that I remember frequently and use it when I am facing challenges and I can’t see an end in sight. It reminds me that the negative situation I am currently facing will not last and I just have to keep going forward day-by-day and things will improve. It helped me at the start to stick to my sobriety journey, knowing that I was doing the right thing by getting rid of the booze. This quote was also liked by a large following on my Instagram community so I wanted to also share it here with you.
#3 Eric Thomas
Eric Thomas is a motivational speaker and mentor who has been through some tough experiences growing up, which includes being homeless. He has now built an extremely successful career and is known worldwide. If you have not heard his full speech before to a classroom which includes the above quote, then please take a few minutes out to give it a listen HERE.
Why do I like it?
I love the whole speech that Eric Thomas delivers to a classroom of students. It’s a mixture of tough love and also motivation to succeed in life. The quote above can be used for any life situation including facing addiction. It’s reminding yourself that the pain you may be experiencing now will not last forever. However, if we quit our sober journey because of this temporary pain of removing alcohol from our lives, then the pain of addiction will remain in our lives forever.
#4 Dalai Lama
Again, whilst this quote isn’t based on sobriety, it’s something that is incredibly important for anyone who is struggling with addiction. The underlying message here delivered beautifully by the Dalai Lama is that your addiction is caused by an underlying unresolved issue. This may be something way back in past from your childhood or could be something more recent. Until this issue has been discovered and resolved can true sobriety begin. Looking inward first and dealing with your problems will allow for your sobriety to flourish.
Why do I like it?
The resonates with me because I had issues through childhood which I firmly believe caused problems with an addiction to alcohol in my adult life. It was only once I truly looked at this that I was able to make peace with my past and not let it negatively impact my future.
#5 Unknown
From my own personal experience of recovery and from speaking with my sober community, we can often be too hard on ourselves when making a life changing commitment – recovery. It is not a straight line upward of success, there will be set backs and day’s where it seems impossible which includes relapses. However, the important thing to remember is to keep pushing forward. It doesn’t have to be perfect; you just need to be keep taking steps in the right direction.
Why do I like it?
I love this quote because it perfectly states what a lot of people in recovery need to remember. We are often too hard on ourselves and then make the commitment to sobriety seem impossible and out of reach, but it’s the everyday small acts of saying no to your addiction that are the most important things and keep you pushing forward to a life of sobriety.
There are so many more quotes I could add to this page but I wanted to start off with my top 5! I will be adding more quotes throughout this year.
