Be Sober – Stay Sober – Quit Alcohol Programme – visit website

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating: 4.8 out of 5 Stars

Launched in 2020 I am honoured to be part of the team behind this incredible quit drinking tool. So of course I am going to put it first in the list of the best quit alcohol apps. However, I have ensured all reviews are written from a neutral perspective to ensure you find a sober tool that is right for your specific needs.

Users of the programme have described Be Sober – Stay Sober as a fantastic tool that is loaded with features and perfect for people who want to change their relationship with alcohol, it is ideal for anyone who wants to quit drinking or maintain their sobriety long term.

Although the Be Sober – Stay Sober programme is not an App (you won’t find it in the App Store), once you have joined the programme on the website www.joinbesober.com it takes under 30 seconds to set it as an App on your smartphone, simple instructions are provided when you join.

The programme has been designed so it is fully functional on mobile and tablet devices and it works as a high-end learning and training app, with the goal of helping users become sober if that is what they want to achieve. The programme is without doubt the best available due to the level of engagement and the fact that users feel part of a community and supported on the journey to alcohol-freedom.

The beauty of this powerful quit alcohol programme is that it includes a structured audio course with over 80 lessons, which users can listen to while they are out and about, in the car or from the comfort of their own home.

On top of this, the programme includes live interactive coaching sessions for users to join in real time, or you can watch them back as a replay. None of the other apps reviewed include coaching as a feature, making Be Sober – Stay Sober stand out as the perfect choice for anyone who is really serious about making a lasting change.

The platform is user friendly, easy to navigate and allows users to work at their own pace. On top of this, the programme includes access to a members-only Facebook community alongside support from coaches via live chat, email and messenger.

Users also have a sobriety counter tool with milestone awards to allow them to track their sobriety and celebrate when they hit their goals.

The cost is a little higher than some of the other quit alcohol apps reviewed, however, when you consider that this programme includes real support from an alcohol coach alongside a structured audio programme it represents fantastic value for money. There is also a 14 day free trial to help you decide if you the programme is what you need.

Although I am biased, I truly believe this app is the best in class if you are looking for something that will give you a clear path to quitting alcohol alongside support, coaching, accountability and connection along the way.

Summary of features

  • 80+ Lesson Audio Course
  • Sobriety counter tool with milestone awards

Twenty Four Hours a DayQuit Alcohol Apps, Best Apps to Stop Drinking, Sober Apps

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating: 4.2 out of 5 Stars

The Twenty Four Hours a Day app promises to allow users to find inspiration anywhere, at any time.

In essence the app provides 366 daily meditations from the best-selling meditation book for people in recovery from addiction. Since 1954, more than 10 million people have been inspired by these readings, which include a thought, meditation, and prayer for each day.

The Twenty-Four Hours a Day app makes it easy to access fast sobriety inspiration whenever and wherever you need it.

Other than the motivation I found the app to be lacking in terms of any features that will help users learn how to quit drinking and there is no support or tools other than the meditation readings.

This app is a great addition to the sober toolbox, but on its own it does not provide enough by way of features to help someone actually quit alcohol.

Summary of features

  • Daily inspiration message
  • Access past daily messages
  • Meditations and the ability to bookmark
  • Daily notifications

I Am Sober

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

I am a big fan of the I Am Sober app, I originally downloaded it as a free sobriety day counter app. But quickly found that it offered more than just a tool for counting the hours, days, weeks and months since I quit drinking.

Along with tracking your sober days, it helps can help you work on building new habits and provides ongoing motivation by connecting you to a wide network of people all striving for the same goal: staying sober one day at a time.

The App provides a daily motivation and a daily pledge feature which can help users stay focused on their goals, alerts can be set to hit your phone at a time of day that works for you.

The developers behind the App are working on a support feature and it already has the ability to share your story with other members for an additional level of accountability and connection.

If this App had been my only tool to quit drinking I don’t believe it would have been enough, it has worked really well for me as a compliment to the other tools and programmes I used and but I mainly use it as a day counter and motivation tool.

Summary of features

  • Sober day tracker
  • Daily pledges & review
  • Sobriety calculator
  • Share your story
  • Milestone tracker
  • Withdrawal timeline
  • Limited support with more to come in the future
  • Profile badge

Sobriety AppsCalm

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating: 4.8 out of 5 Stars

I love the Calm app. Although it isn’t specifically designed for helping people stop drinking, I found it to be a huge help on my own journey to sobriety as it helped me learn techniques for relaxation, mediation and mindfulness. All of which play a big part in learning to deal with discomfort in the early days and weeks when we quit alcohol.

Calm is the leading app for Sleep, Meditation and Relaxation and has millions of users worldwide who experience less stress, reduced anxiety and better sleep through the use of guided meditations, sleep stories, breathing programs, stretching exercises, and relaxing music. Calm is recommended by top psychologists, therapists, and mental health experts.

What I have enjoyed most about Calm is that it can help with more than just alcohol, it has enabled me to grow as a person and become more grounded and present. While the app doesn’t provide users with the tools to quit drinking, it is most definitley a tool I would highly recommend having as part of a sober toolbox.

People can often feel nervous about exploring meditation and mindfulness, as a beginner I found it to be perfect. The meditations are guided and provide clear and simple instructions and they are also short enough to not require a huge time commitment.

A new Daily Calm meditation is added each morning, this keeps things fresh and creates a great experience that keeps users coming back for me.

It definitely helps me stay calmer and more mindful and I would recommend this app for anyone who wants to learn who to deal with uncomfortable thoughts, feelings or emotions.

Summary of features

  • New and original meditations every day
  • Streak tracker
  • Guided and unguided meditations
  • Beautiful interface, sounds and backgrounds
  • Topic focused meditation programmes (anxiety, self-love, happiness, focus etc’)
  • Sleep focused meditations

Nomo

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

Nomo was created by a former drinker who saw a need for a tool to keep himself on track and motivated. It was born out of his passion for helping others on the path to freedom from alcohol.

Similar to the I Am Sober App the main purpose of Nomo is to help users track how long they have been alcohol-free. The best thing about Nomo is that it is a free quit alcohol app.

If you’re looking for a simple clock that can track the number of days you’ve been sober, then Nomo is a great quit alcohol app for you. Users can create as many clocks as they wish, meaning you can track the time since you last did just about anything.

There are several optional features that make Nomo more than just a day counter and a popular choice as a companion App in sobriety.

Summary of features

  • Create as many sobriety clocks as you need
  • Find accountability partners
  • Share selected clocks with accountability partners
  • Send a notification to partners when you’re feeling tempted
  • See how much money you’ve saved by not supporting your habit

Drink Unit, Calories, Money Spent AppDrinkaware

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating: 4.1 out of 5 Stars

The Drinkaware app is not a tool that will help you work through the process of quitting drinking or provide support in sobriety. Instead it allows users to track how many units and how much money they are spending wasting on alcohol. It is designed for people who have not yet quit and may be questioning their current relationship with drinking.

Users add specific brands of drinks and quantities they have consumed into the app and can easily see how many units they have had and whether their drinking habit is becoming dangerous. I used this app extensively for a long period before I actually quit drinking, it helped me to become aware of how out of control my booze habit had become. It was eye-opening to see the app informing me how dangerous my drinking was and it certainly gave me another firm push down the path to quitting alcohol for good.

It has plenty of great features and also shows how many calories users have had in their drinks. After I became sober I discovered that I had no use for the Drinkaware app any longer and it felt great to delete it from my iPhone!

Summary of features

  • Track your alcohol consumption day by day
  • Ad specific drink brands into the app
  • Understand if your drinking has become dangerous
  • Track how much you are spending on alcohol
  • Learn more about the health benefits of cutting down or stopping drinking
  • Track the units and calories in what you drink

Sober Tool

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating: 4.6 out of 5 Stars

The Sober Tool app allows users to keep track of how many days they have been sober with an intuitive day counter, motivation and a tool claimed to help beat cravings.

The app was developed by a 30 year sober Harvard educated Licensed Chemical Dependency Counsellor and a team from The Ohio State University.

What I like most about this app is the function that allows users to work through cravings and triggers to drink. During a craving the app will ask questions and guide users with motivating responses to help them stay sober.

The tool can work well as a distraction during a craving, however, I am not sure it replaces some of the tactics I use with my coaching clients that are proven to work and I strongly believe we each need to find our own go-to craving-busting tools on the sobriety journey.

The app also gives users awards, reminders and motivational messages to help them reach their goals and stay on track.

Summary of features

  • Sobriety counter that calculates days and money saved
  • Rewards based on length of time sober
  • Motivational messages and quotes
  • In-built search engine with responses based around how you feel
  • Question based tool for beating cravings
  • Chat forum to connect with others on the same journey

Quit Alcohol Apps ReviewedRecovery Box – 12 Step Toolbox

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

Recovery Box is a tool based around the Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) Big Book 12 step process to quitting alcohol.

The app includes a sobriety counter to allow users to track the number of days they have been sober alongside pages from the Big Book and readings from AA meetings.

The app also includes a feature for making notes and users can set reminders to alert them at specific times of the day.

AA seems to divide opinions in the sober community, however, if it is a good fit for you then this app might be the right choice.

Summary of features

  • Guides users through the 12 step process used by AA
  • Includes 164 pages of the Big Book from Alcoholics Anonymous
  • Prayers used in ‘recovery’ meetings
  • Sobriety counter to track days sober

The Mindfulness App

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating 4.6 out of 5 Stars

Whilst not an App that was built to focus on sobriety, The Mindfulness App has some amazing features to aid with meditation. When I first started my journey, I struggled to sleep and found that the 250+ meditations really did help me relax and be present in the moment, which in turn helped me to sleep better and smash my sobriety.

I love the fact that there are timed meditations, so you can pick sessions to suit your personal preferences. There is also a wealth of content available from well-known meditators across the App. The App is extremely user friendly and once you have downloaded it to your device, you can get started on your mindfulness journey right away.

The reason it didn’t get to 5 out of 5 stars, is that I felt a bit more could have been given without having to commit to the premium account.

Summary of Features

  • 5-day starter pack to get you on your mindfulness journey.
  • Timed meditation sessions lasting anywhere from 3-30minutes.
  • Helpful meditation reminders and mindful notifications, aiding with implementing mindfulness throughout your day.
  • Statistics – Easily track your progress with meditation.
  • App Integration – You can easily integrate with App with other health Apps.
  • Premium Option – Gain access to increased content and you can take the App offline, along with increased meditation sessions available.

Quitzilla: Sobriety Counter & Bad Habits

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating 4.5 out of 5 Stars

I’m one of those people that loves to track my own personal progress. Getting to see what I am achieving in real-time helps to motivate me and push me forward. It has always been the same for all areas in my life. I was keen from the outset to find an easy-to-use App which tracks how long I have been sober for and that’s when I found the QuitZilla App!

This App does what it says on the tin. Once you have installed the App to your device, you can start tracking how long you have kicked your drinking for. You also get to see how much money you are saving by not buying alcohol, a trophy room for personal motivation and statistics which breaks down the data for you.

The reason this App didn’t get to 5 out of 5 stars is that whilst the main features of the App are free, the adverts can get in the way of the user experience. Also, to get the most out of the App, you are forced to become a premium paying customer.

Summary of Features

  • Quit Alcohol Tracker – Track the days and hours that you have been sober for.
  • Tracks monetary savings from not buying alcohol.
  • Intuitive reward system.
  • Additional pin-code security to stop the App being accessed by others.
  • Data backup options.
  • Enhanced personalisation with colour themes.
  • Motivational extras such as ‘quote of the day’.

I AM

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating 4.8 out of 5 Stars

I love positive motivation, it’s one of the reasons I am active on Instagram as I really do enjoy reading motivational quotes to help give my mental attitude a kick in the right direction when it needs it. As such, I was looking for an App which would give me positive daily affirmations for thought-provoking thinking and that’s when I found the I AM App.

This App gives me everything I need in terms of daily positive vibes and affirmations. With a focus on self-Care, it is amazing how having one of their affirmations for the day pop up on your phone really can change your mindset and I highly recommend it to anyone who loves positive quotes and thoughtful affirmations.

The I AM App just missed out on top marks as although the App is a free download, to unlock full features you have to pay which can be off-putting. However, they are doing some great work and receiving excellent reviews online.

Summary of Features

  • Daily Affirmations and positive quotes right to your phone.
  • Wide range of affirmation activities.
  • Customisable options
  • Save and browse through your affirmation collections

Joe & Charlie – AA Big Book

Quit Alcohol App Review Overall Rating 4.5 out of 5 Stars

As the App name suggests, this App focuses on AA for recovery. This will not be for everyone as you may not appreciate the underlying Christian message behind the App. However, I am a strong advocate of trying different methods of learning and discovery. If you are curious about AA for sobriety, then this App is a great starting point for you.

I was really impressed with how packed this App is. There is lots of helpful information around sobriety along with a load of extras which include relaxing music, audio & visual content, and a number of external resources for the recovery journey.

This App scores highly with my rating but just misses the mark of 5 stars as I am not a self-confessed fan of AA. However, I did appreciate the content they have included into the App and if you are AA curious, then you may well rate this App 5 out of 5.

Summary of Features

  • AA Big Book Study
  • AA speaker tapes
  • Numerous audio tapes
  • Meditation Sounds
  • External sobriety resources
